Absolute, total guess as I recently got this plant and know virtually nothing about it, but look up Salvia clevelandii.

To post a picture (not sure if it's the same in all forums), you first type the text of your post, then when you hit the button that says "preview message" there should be a section in the next page where you find the picture on your computer to upload. You will most likely have to also scale the picture down in size. I also forgot the size limit, but I'm pretty sure it's less than 50k.

That being said, from your mention of the prickly flower heads, I wonder if you have a Thistle sage (Salvia carduacea) or at least something similar in morphology.

Redgum, to attach a photo, you need to sign up for a free account at an image hosting site (i.e, Photobucket.com), then upload your pictures from your computer to your album there. To embed them within a post, you would need to copy and paste the TAG line, which will be under your image on Photobucket, into the message box here at GW. Or you can just copy and paste the LINK line from Photobucket into the "Optional Link URL" box at the bottom of the "Post a Follow-Up" area here at GW.

You can only go the route that Mojoboo described if you're starting a new thread topic, and the size limit is 60k and under.

Thanks everyone for your help with id of plant and how to post images. Got both issues sorted now. The plant is actually not a salvia at all, but Pycnostachys urticifolia (Lamiaceae).
