Salvia elegans 'Golden Delicious'

Well, this will be the last time I grow any Salvia elegans for that matter. I thought it would be a good hummingbird plant, but it just blooms too late. My hummers have been gone for a good month, and it just started blooming late last week, so they totally missed out. It's not even in full bloom yet, and may not make it because we are going to have a frost any day now. I recalled growing the species one year with the same results. Just blooms much too late.

Thought I would toss this info out there in case someone in colder zones than mine intended to grow it as a nectar plant for the hummingbirds.

My elegans has been blooming for a month. But no blooms
on "Golden Delicious" . You would do better w/greggii,
microphylla,coccinea and guaranitica species. So you would get the hummers on their way to winter habit.

Yeah, I have S. 'Cherry Queen', 'Hot Lips', 'Lady in Red', and 'Black and Blue', all of which have been blooming for a long time, and the hummers loved 'em, along with the Dwarf Red Porterweed and the Turk's Cap. I just had hoped the Golden Delicious would have bloomed earlier. The hummers also liked the Lantana, Passion flowers, Cosmos, Tithonia, and Cypress Vine, so I was not without nectar for them. Ya live and learn, and I had to try it just one more time.

Are you still seeing any hummers, Art?

We had a explosion of color (from my Salvias) about a month ago after that I have not seen any hummers.
I still have blooms on darcyi, greggii,microphylla,
scabra,guaranitica,mexicana,madrensis,elegans,lyciodes,
regla,caudata,miniata,splendens,farinacea,Blue Chiquita,
Mystic Spires, Silke's dream and purpurea.
