Overwintering Guaranitica

There seems to be some disagreement on the web regarding Salvia guaranitica root nodules. Has anyone actually dug up these nodules and overwintered just them indoors and then re-grown the plant from them in the Spring? Some reports say they are tubers and can regenerate the plant, others say they are root nodules used to store just plant sugars.

I know the usual ways to overwinter salvias, so I'm really only interested in finding out who has tried to overwinter the roots of guaranitica like Cannas or sweet potato vine.
