I've never been able to overwinter S. discolor in zone 7, so if you want to keep it you should probably dig it up or take cuttings. I've kept plants and cuttings over in the garage under grow lights, minimum temps about 40F, although the plants looked pretty pathetic by spring. The cuttings were in a soil free potting mix with lots of extra perlite.

Thanks Karen. I at least have the one inside . The other one at 51 inches is really big not so much the plant but the roots go all the way down I will try digging it up again tomorow.I'm afraid I won't get all the roots . Sarah

Remember that you need to balance off the amount of fine root hairs below ground with the foliage surface area. When you dig up plants, you are doing a severe root pruning and it is necessary to prune the top as well. Discolor has the annoying habit of losing a lot of shoots when it is brought in, but usually recovers by midwinter. I repot my stock plants at the first sign of the end of sustained hot weather in late summer. Bringing in a well-rooted plant and potting it up just before returning it to the greenhouse will often kill it with kindness.

Thanks Richard, I dug it up it's in a large pot outside now. I will trim off some top growth. It's odd I thought the roots were very deep but I think they just were in the nooks and crannys of some Pennsylvania fieldstone intermingled with salvia sinaloensis. Sarah
