What about this? Salvia-like...but what?

Hi -

I saw this growing in eastern Turkey near Arguvan/Malatya. The pink part is not flowers, it's enlarged calyces, a la Ballota but the plant certainly doesn't look like Ballota. The calyces are dry, like tissue paper, and presumably carry the seed in the wind.

Could it be Salvia multicaulis?

There are many species from Eastern Turkey. I am still desperate to acquire seeds of S. kronenbergii from the Van Province.

Hey, I bet it is! I did a search for S. multicaulis, and while there was no photo of the expanded calyces, it did mention just that trait. The color certainly seems right. Oh I hope I hope some of the seed I collected is still viable after two years.....(I had planted some in a planter but it did not like that at all...it wants real dirt.)

I've attached an image of S. multicaulis taken by Panayoti Kelaidis of the Denver Botanical Garden. They have an excellent collection of Turkish Salvias.
