Propagation of S.blepharophylla

Posted by hybridsage (My Page) on

I have a S.bleparophylla "Sweet Numbers" that I need to
get more plants growing. I know cuttings are hard to get stared on this cultivar. How can I get some of the runners removed from the mother plant?
Without killing both....

Try growing in a humusy soil to increase the robustness of the plant. Blepharophyllas are somewhat hard to propagate unless they are growing. The stolons can be harvested for new plants when they start emitting both roots and leafing stems. The main crown should also be vigorous.

The other three common(?) forms are: old-fashioned (at least in the Texas trade, before the three Yucca-Do collections), with no cultivar name; and Diablo and Painted Ladies, two selections from seed collected st the same site. Wade tells me that there was another, Assaradero, but it did not make it out of the nursery very well.
