This is my first year with a pineapple sage, as well, SWCT, and I just love it. Every day, I look forward to trimming back the spent stems just so I can smell their deliciousness! :D

What is it with this plant? I planted it in Spring but it just grows ugly and scraggly. It was never a nice full plant. Its like a few sticks that grow almost sideway and up and very few flowers.

It really likes it wet, unlike most salvias. When it really rains all summer here, the stems have small roots growing up the stems for about 3 feet. It also spreads like crazy when it's kept wet. I had to chop my 2 big clumps down after they were blown over by Rita as were leucantha.

ahh, thats the secret then. Yeah, I will have to admit it does lack water. I water it perhaps once a week. I do notice that by that time it gets a bit wilty, but greens up right after I water.

Gotcha, thanks so much. Its in an area that I hand water weekly. I think I'll move it to an area that gets water every other day or so.

Can this also be grown from cuttings? In case I end up killing it...

It is extremely easy to grow from cuttings. Up here in frozen 6b the fresh cuttings often are more vigorous than plants that manage somehow to overwinter. Here a 6 inch cutting will turn into a 7 foot monster by fall, while one I have that overwintered is only about 3 feet tall. Just stick some cuttings into a pot full of moist soil, keep it watered and out of direct sun, and in a month you'll have new plants.

Mine is indoors for the winter and blooming its head off. For hummers grow Coral Nymph. But for pinching and sniffing, pineapple is hard to beat.

UPDATE: My pineapple sage is now filling up very quickly... weird, but nevertheless a good thing! And blooming like crazy. I guess it 'heard' I was unhappy.
