S. clevelandii - Some leaves longer than others

I got a Salvia clevelandii (possibly a hybrid) about 4 months ago from a local nursery, Plant Depot in San Juan Capistrano CA. I really like it, fantastic fragrance. I noticed that some of its leaves are much longer than other leaves on the same plant. Does anybody know why that it is? Do the longer leaves help it in some special way to manage heat or drought better? Just curious.
