At first I had trouble rooting salvia greggiis as well, but they are just a slower salvia to root, I take cuttings off the new growth, just got the salvia greggii navaho purple rooted it took like 6- 8 weeks, the leaves do perk up though.

I can greggiis to root in 2+ weeks if I take cuttings from robust growth. I use the "asparagus rule" to determine what part should be under the rooting medium. This should be firm green wood (no bark) that remains relatively unbent when bending the top down.

Also, a propagation mat helps. A 75 degree root zone is optimal for Salvias

I think my problems was the age of some of the stems. Upon inspecition this morning after reading both of your posts, the ones that have rooted and are activly growing are the ones with green stems. The ones that had gotten woody were they ones that have failed. Thank you both. Now to head out to the garden and take a few more cuttings while weather still permits.

I took cuttings of greggii ealier in the summer and they failed. I assumed it's too late to take more. Are you keeping your rooted cuttings in a window or under lights this winter or do you plan to let them go dormant on your porch?
Maybe I should try again.
