Salvia Splendens is a warm weather annual here in this part of the world and will more than likely not survive the winter. It will quite possibly reseed for you next spring. THey are native to Brazil and here they are used as annual bedding plants. Enjoy your blooms while you have them for the rest of the season.

What zone are you in? How a plant in your area reacts to winter might be different then in NY. I realize that GA is a mountainous state and so has many climate zones. I'm in a 9 and my various S. splendens have survived for 8 years -- even thru' the coldest winters -- briefly freezing temps. Are you already into winter? If not you can probably enjoy your blooms a bit longer.

I'd certainly try saving it. First, don't prune it; leave on all it's growth to help protect the crown; you can prune it next spring. Second, don't pile leaves on top, this will only cause rot. Rather cover the plant with boughs -- like from your Xmas tree. Three, take cuttings and grow them in the house over winter.... it needs to be warm for Salvias to set root. There are several former threads telling you how to do this.
