Questions on Plant Dormancy!

| There are a lot of questions going thru my mind concerning salvia plant dormancy and others. Being in zone 6 I doubt my plants are dormant even though leaves are yellowed somewhat and blackened around the edges. A lot of leaves are still hanging on, but as far as trying to help plants to live thru the winter , when is the right time to know when to mulch so its not too early and how and when do you know if its too late. What if a snow would hit before thanks giving would it then be too late. I hope someone has the answer. |

hummersteve: Which species of Salvias do you have or that you are asking about? Sorry I should be familiar with your garden but my memory is not as good as it use to be. Art |

| Steve, Knowing Indiana weather, if I were you I would put down a good 3" to 4" of mulch right now and leave it until you see some signs of growth come spring time when the weather and the ground warms up. Also, depending on which Salvias you have, you might want to take some seeds and/or clippings to overwinter indoors. Linda |

| Art--- All of the salvias are annuals for my area, mostly guaranitica and coccinea. Linda-- Actually I have taken cuttings from some and have bagged some already in the garage. Its just that some of the more experienced gardners on dormancy say its too early to cover. We are still having daytime temps in the 50s fairly consistantly. |
