Can It be Rescued?!

I gave my father a snake plant about 20 years ago, and it thrived magnificently. My father died 3 years ago, and now my mother is moving to a smaller house within Ohio. I had some of her furniture shipped to me in Chicago (yes, I am coming to the point!) whereupon she asked me if I would like the plant, as she didn't have a place for it in her new home. I figured, why not chance it? It took four days to get here, but the movers brought it inside every night.

It's now been a couple of weeks. The plant is very droopy, as it was when it got here, and is exuding some dark sap-like substance. The leaves are still green, however. Is there a chance for its survival? I would appreciate any advice as to how to care for it - or should I just give up?
