Rotting Sans...

| I neglected a pot of Sans...been sitting in the garage since last Summer. Hubby found it and watered it, now it's rotting. I knocked off all the soil and managed to salvage 1 piece, still with some roots, but no rhizome. It's a bit soft on the end. I've left it out to "dry out" before I pot it in new soil with lots of sand and perlite.
Did I miss anything in trying to save it?
Also, a 2nd piece isn't in too bad of shape, but broke off from the rotted rhizome completely. Any hope in it sprouting some new roots?
Fairly new to Sans if you couldn't tell... |

| You can either repot them as is or you can chop them into segments and use them as leaf cuttings. If the rhizomes have rotted very badly you can try soaking the root areas in diluted 20% (1:4) household bleach for 10 minutes or so. Let them dry afterwards and repot them in dry medium with gravel, bark chunks and perlite. Avoid fine sand, as it tends to block drainage rather than increase it. Leave it alone for about a week and then water thoroughly. Do not water again until dry. If you take leaf cuttings, just chop the leaves up into 2-3 inch long sections and stick them into the soil. Make sure you keep track of which end of the leaf is the bottom, as the cuttings won't root if the top end is stuck into the soil. |

| For those of you who don't know you can also lay a rhizone down on it's side on top of the soil, (node= a little bump, if you can find a node put it face up. don't give up on the plant, I use damp soil, to start them in and shallow pots (3" deep in the smallest pot it will fit in. I do not water again until I see signs of growth on those nodes. Bottom heat will help them along, but not needed if in a warm room, I have never used bottom heat. they will need some light. Norma |

| Just an update (1 year later)... I continued to forget about this Sans, laying on a shelf in the garage, not in a pot, until late in the Summer. I then popped it in a pot, and by the Fall it had rooted and sent up an offshoot! Got lucky on that one... |

| Good to hear Daisy, Thanks for your update. Yes & no to you got lucky; these plants really DO want to grow, they just need a bit of a leg up sometimes (right Norma?). |

Daisy, You have come to the right place to learn. I have seen these plants thrive in stores where all the other plants around them are dead due to no water. It seems we kill them by over loving them. They like to be left alone and just the minimum attention. Also I learned so much these past few months here on this forum. Thanks Norma, Karen, Jeff, Marlon, and so others who posted only a few times. Really a great family. |
