A striking dwarf form of Sansevieria cylindrica var. patula

Two years ago, a group of Thai Sans. growers joined the Flora Jakarta 2008 in Indonesia

They visited one of the world's greatest Sans. collection at Mr Edi Sebayang's house.

Among the best and ultra rare varieties of Sans that he've kept for years,

there was a striking dwarf form of Sans. cylindrica var. patula

This new cultivar mutated from a group of cuttings in Indonesia.

Edi calls this special cultivar 'Bonsellensis' (means 'bonsai')

Mr Edi Sebayang with his Sans. collection.

Sans. cylindrica cv 'Bonsellensis'

The 'Bonsellensis' off shoot which was brought back to Thailand via my friend.

The same plant last year, showed at our Sans. Show & Contest, Bangkok, Thailand

It is interesting that it doesn't look like San. cylindrica v. patula.
That seems, in the picture, that it is rather a husky plant but very beautiful, does it offset by runners, grown in full sun or shade. Norma

The plant in Indonesia received full sun, while other kept under 50% shade cloth here.

In fact, I've heard about using plant growth retardants, Paclobutrazol,
usually sold under the tradename "Bonzi" which acts to reduce cell elongation.
The result is reduction in foliage size and internodal spacing in many folia or flowering pot plant.

In Thailand, some Adenium and Sans. growers have used this product to control plant shape.
Also in Indonesia, some Sans. lovers who love to minimize their plants as "Bonsai"

These Sans. in Indonesia could be treated with plant growth retardants.

But this product can affect for a period of time, from month to year,
before back to normal growth if doesn't use continuously.

This is an example of Sans. cylindrica var. patula which had been treated with
plant growth retardant and turned to be normal.

While the "Boncellensis" has never changed its dwarf characteristic
even its offspring, via leaf cutting, that I got from my friend, here.

    hey Stephania,

what kind of soil do you guys us there? is there a particular mix that is popular? or do growers there all have unique mixtures? and does the soil stay moist due to the humidity in your country or does it stay dry until you guys water?

    thanks,

    Bri.

Hi Brian, here, we prefer a mixed of good drainage organic soil:
coconut husk, leaf-mould, pumice, gardening soil, charcoal.
The media can hold some amount of moisture between water, but not too much.

    Hi Stephania,

This new cultivar should be call as Boncel (Dwarf in English) not Bonsellensis.

This cultivar will be published in next Sansevieria Journal, maybe on May 2010.
