Sansevieria in bloom ...

I received a large Sansevieria two years ago from someone that was moving and didn't want to take it with them. It was planted in a large plastic tub which was entirely to large for the plant. I separated the "colony" into two separate more logical pots, and they seem to have done very well.
I am getting ready to set it outside for the summer in its usual spot, and discovered a long spike with clusters of buds, and a few flowers starting to open from the bottom up. I have very little experience with Sansevierias, but I do recall reading that they do bloom, so I wasn't all that surprised to find it. Evidently I am doing something right.
I thought I would post this to find out how often this plant blooms as an indoor captive, and what magic may make it occur.
Thanks ...

| Usually, seperating them causes them to stop this behavior, and allowing them to grow undisturbed in a pot, filling it up with roots, prompts this behavior. Each flower will last one night, releasing a heavenly scent through your house. Each morning, those blooms will wither. Because of the amount of blooms on each stalk, you should get about 7 days worth of blooms. Enjoy. Mine have been holding out on me. If you move them from their preferred spot, sometimes they sulk... |

| I've found that most S. trifasciata typoes can bloom after only a year's growth. Each plant usually only blooms once, and the pups will flower when they mature. Some species take a little longer, but a nice sized mature clump of Sansevieria of just about any species should flower every year or two. Joe 'but that's only of conditions are right...' DeRosa |

Thanks ... I appreciate the information. I have decided not to move these guys outdoors until after this flowering event has completed. I will look forward to future flowering events, I have a lot of available source material. Richard |
