Online sources

Hi everyone, I have been looking at all your beautiful photos. I am remembering all the lovely ones I grew when I lived in South Fla. many years ago. You are inspiring me to start collecting some of these unusual varieties. .

So, my question is, what are the best online sources for sans?

Thanks!
Barbara

Barbara,

I've had very good success with Arid Lands.

http://www.aridlands.com/

Nice plants, great selection, decent prices.

Michael

RE: Online sources

Bob Smoley's Gardenworld (Florida) is another good source with decent prices. He can sometimes be slow to ship (or not) depending how busy he is. Also making friends with folks on this forum may get you some plants! ;)

 o
RE: Online sources

Thanks guys. I looked on Smoley's site. Looks like he has almost any kind you can imagine. I have seen a few complaints on his shipping and substitutions. Probably well worth a trial order. I can get going between him and Arid Lands.

RE: Online sources

Bmock,
Where in the USA do you live? What kinds of sansevieria do you like? trifasciatas? small? variegated?

 o
RE: Online sources

I'm in north Georgia. We're kind of up in the mountains and woods. I don't do much gardening outdoors anymore. Just too many deer and critters ready to snack on anything green.

I spent some time looking at all the different varieties online. the short birdnest types appeal to me, and I love the variegates. I wish I still had the moonshine that I once had.

I had no idea there are so many sans available these days. It will be fun to collect a few.

I like tropicals and succulents. My favorite plant is anthurium clarinervium, it's over 30 years old!

 o
RE: Online sources

'Moonshine' is readily available. I see it often in the big chain stores and supermarkets. You should find that easily and it is a nice one. The little birdsnest 'hahnis' are nice in that they don't take a lot of space. I may have an extra or two later this summer. A lot of nice variegates.....some more difficult to grow than others. Generally tose with a LOT of yellow or white are more sensitive than the more greener ones. S. masoniana is a neat Sans that gets HUGE. It comes in variegated too. I like the shape of S. cylindrica and it also looks good variegated. There are many varieties of good old S. trifasciata (including 'Moonshine' and many many others). 'Midnight Shine' is a beautiful mid-size trifasciata (same liek 'Moonshine') with deep green leaves and a thin gold edge. There is also a commonly available Futura plant with a yellow edge but normal colored leaves. Thailand seems to have an ideal climate for growing Sans......you see all kinds of unusual Sans species, hybrids, and variegates showing up from there. Check ebay for the variety though prices are often high it is fun just too look at the pics.

RE: Online sources

Looks like it's easy to get hooked on all the different varieties. Thanks for your input. I do remember from years ago that some of them are more fussy. It's pretty cool when they surprise you with those fragrant flower spikes. Do you ever grow some of the ones that send out the new plants on a long runner? Another one was sort of standing up on it's roots, like it was walking along. Mother nature was having some fun that day. I need to start writing some names down, can't remember **** these days.

I'm just having fun reading and looking at all the photos. I was really laughing when I read about the Bantels contest. Just too funny!

If you do have some extra plants sometime, keep me in mind. Barb

RE: Online sources

Welcome Barb,
Keep watching those big box stores. My daughter just bought me a knock out 'Moonshine' for only $2.99 on clearance at K-Marts. I have bought some Gold Hahnii at Giant Eagle Supermarket for only a few dollars also. My Futura Gold Edge came from Wal-Marts on clearance for $2.50 a 6" pot busting at the seams. I purchased some 'Gold Flame' at Lowes' for about $3 a small pot. I also got some rare ones free (pay shipping) from some friends here.
The trick is not being in a hurry. Like yah, try to control the junkie in you. Ha Ha.
Also I purchased from Both of those nurseries. I like Bob Smoleys. Never got a bad deal yet.
Stush

RE: Online sources

Hi Stush, Good advice! I love to roam thru the garden dept at Lowes, especially. You never know what you my find. I have just discovered the garden forums this year and really jump started my plant craving.

Btw, I have really enjoyed your photos. You have some beautiful plants. They all look so healthy.

I will try not to be a junkie! i don't want to be crowded out of the house! When fall comes and everything on the deck has to come inside, I'll be thinking that you told me not to be in a hurry and buy too many. Barb

 o
RE: Online sources

Barb, I can't take my own advise. My wife is ready to shot me if I bring home one more plant. Winter is a bummer living up north. Thanks for the complement.
Stush

 o
RE: Online sources

Hey, Stush,

Here's another compliment for you. I just spent many hours reading back through the old posts. I am on page 4 now. Anyway I enjoyed reading all the discussions you generated when you were new and were asking lots of questions. Lots of good reading. Now I know a lot more about sans! Thanks. Barb

 o
RE: Online sources

That's why were here. I leared so much in one year here than 40 years on my own. Lots of great people here to help you out on any problems.

 o
RE: Online sources

Check ebay. I've gotten some near perfect Sansevieria starter plants of harder to find species. Of course be picky and of course buy only actual plants that are pictured. The plants have been very well packaged from the sellers I've bought from.

I've bought stuff from Arid Lands and once from Smoleys. Tend to mostly get plants (especially the Sansevierias) that have been sitting around a long time, and the plants look damaged ugly and have seen better days. Of course the roots will grow, but then you have to wait a few years to get strong new growth to then restart and get rid of the ugly beat up old original growth. I'm impatient.

 o
RE: Online sources

Hello Barb, Well my name is Greg on this forum I'm "hijole" just thought I'd say welcome to the forum I myself have never order anything online, I'm more spontaneous and if I see ( and if its a good price of course I swoop it up.)

I too have exchanged plants with quite a few members on the site and everyone here is like a big family so pull up a chair and make yourself at home girl, and like stush said again, a person can learn So much here.

Well I thought I would send you some flowers this morning too so I hope you enjoy these pictures.

I know, I know others might have thought I was literally sending them, I sent my wife a dozen roses like this one time, it didn't have the same impact but I thought, Hey, its the thought that counts right?

O well maybe down the road when the plants start sending out pups we can Exchange stuff for reals ok.

Have a great day.

Greg

 o
RE: Online sources

Down right neighborly of you Greg!

And yes, we should have welcomed Barbara much sooner.

Welcome!

Michael

RE: Online sources

Hi Noki, Greg, Michael,

Thank you so much for the welcome. I actually do feel like I know pretty much everyone since I have spent so many hours reading all your plant discussions. It's fun to read about all your collections and see your photos. I loved the Bantels contest. What fun!

Noki, I have looked on Ebay several times. There is always a big selection to choose from. Quite a number of venders seem to be in Thailand, I wouldn't want to pay the shipping on those. It's good to know that you have had a good experience.

Greg, thanks for the virtual flowers, are these growing in your yard? Very pretty.

You all will be seeing me hanging out around here. I am really hooked on learning about sans, I love the diversity of form and color.

 o
RE: Online sources

Barbara, I know its kinda late already but I was wrapping up my day here so I decided to respond tonight rather than tomorow when I'll be busy, busy.

Yeah these are some of my own plants from my collection, one thing maybe you have found out yet, maybe. That is, once you get connected to this site your connected It's kind log Luke these addicts you hear about who will do almost anything for a fix. Well same thing for a plant , not just any plant but one you've never
seen before.

So decide now, are you in or out? Lol... It's a lot of fun though and it good for you too more importantly, so just roll up your sleeves and grow your collection.

Greg

RE: Online sources

Barbara,

Yes, this is a plant nerds dream - weird plants that are growable and other people that appreciate your endeavors. The group here is pleasant and knowledgeable.

For eBay, I've placed settings for only North American sources. It cuts out most of the Thai dealers, except one, vitchsansgarden. He is VERY good and sends nice plants. Other more "local" dealers can be excellent. Rocksmith222 is now greenplants2012. Still the same fine service and superior plants. His plants arrive in great condition. I've found them to be vigorous and root faster than from some of the other dealers. Raresans is Juan Chahinian and provides REALLY outlandish variegates and species that are more expensive than I can afford. There are others that send equally fine plants, all from USA sources. If you find a good dealer, it's worth risk.

Recently, I paid more for a plant (S. eliptica, HGB 22830) than I really wanted. When it arrived, the size and vigor assured me that what I had paid was worth it. It's huge and beautiful. I'm a very happy plant geek.

Michael

 o
RE: Online sources

Michael-
Glad your purchase worked out well. If it was documented, heatlhy and vigorous, and most of all....something you wanted....I am sure it was worth it!

Hey Greg....if I sent virtual flowers at my wife like that she would probably throw the computer at me, LOL! Not really...she is a fantastic gal and though she teases me about my plant insaneness .....she enjoys seeing plants and garden.

Keep reading through the old posts. There are some good people there too that unfortunatley are not around. Joe DeRosa lives five minutes from my work but faded into obscurity. I liked his old posts and his perspective because he was local. Russ Hammer is a GREAT guy in Florida who has or had a great Sans collection and had a good handle on all the different cultivars. He may be busy with other things in life right now and I hope he pops up again one day. Michael L is a great grower of Sans...esp. trifasciata varieties. Several other folks that I am probably missing....and I am enjoying the input and experience of the newer folks that are making this site active. All of you who posted in this thread seem like good folks!

bmock- is there anything in particular you are looking for? I guess you will have to get a 'Bantel's Sensation' to get into the contest...he he. My B.S. has not done much yet this summer. I imagine there are some things going on UNDER the soil that I don't see yet.

 o
RE: Online sources

Oh dear, that means there are TWO Michael L. on board!

I guess there will be clarification at come point. I collect species of the non-trifasciata types. Right now I've got between 50-60 species, with a few subspecies and geographic variants.

Michael

 o
RE: Online sources

It seems to me that sans are roughly divided into two groups, tropical and desert. Please forgive my ignorance on this. Anyway, of the two, I would say that the more lush and tropical, trifasciata and others have the most appeal. On the other hand some of those small succulent types are pretty interesting too. Oh heck, I like almost all of them. There is of course some limits of space available.

I actually saw a moonshine in a local nursery yesterday, but passed on it. It was a good sized plant, but a little ragged. Maybe I should go back and rescue it. Well, I guess I must be addicted.

 o
RE: Online sources

Well we have michaela signed in May of 2002 and Michael signed in Feb. 2012 and it looks like we have a new addict to our crew.

Barb, that moon shine is an eye catcher for sure very nice to look at almost exotic too. I would go back and get it, " just saying."

You can never have to many of them, and there not too heavy to move around either.

Greg

RE: Online sources

Great news!! My daughter asked me for some snake plants for her house because she heard they clean-up the air in a house. I said also the radon gas that may be larking in the basement. I now have a place to put maybe a dozen plants there come fall. Come spring, she can put them outside or give them back. Maybe like father like daughter. Next maybe I can get her to join us here.

 o
RE: Online sources

Stush,

Now that sounds like a good reason to add another dozen plants to your stash. Just to enable you a little.

I went back to the nursery today and came home with a nice Moonshine. They hadn't bothered to label it. It's so full the pot is lumpy.

Micheal, thanks for the info on Ebay. I didn't know you could change your settings to North America. That is helpful.

 o
RE: Online sources

Do You know this one?

http://www.ornamentalplantstore.com/

I think is a Philippines located nursery. It has very interesting plants at low prices. I am tempted trying to place a (small!) order.
roberto

 o
RE: Online sources

Roberto,
Small order?? At $35 shipping I think I would put in a larger order if I was going to buy anything. I saw some hahnii I would love to add to me collection and like you stated, very low prices. Just that shipping charge over head. I think I would pass on this one. It would be nice to co-op an order here. But if the plants don't show up or wrong plants shipped. Happens to me more often than I like to admit. Still maybe Bob Smoley will have some of these next year.

 o
RE: Online sources

Roberto,
You have to add $35 for Phytosanitary certificate .

 o
RE: Online sources

Sorry, I didn't mention I am located in Tenerife (Canary Islands) and it is much cheaper to me ordering from Thailand than from the USA. Moreover, many US nurseries don't ship abroad. So, I am always obliged to pay 80-100 dollars for shipping, Phyto Cert., Customs Rights and so on. And I have to accept that sometimes everything goes wrong (the parcel is lost, the plants are wrongly labelled or definitely dead). When I am back to Italy, I usually fill up my luggage at Alan Butler's Nursery....
Here in Canaries Sans. are not cultivated, but they sprout out anywhere in the gardens and in the wild, but just the common ones

 o
RE: Online sources

Roberto,

What a great picture! Is that singularis behind you? Fantastic plant!

I wish I could convince Alan to ship to the USA. It's not that difficult if you are bringing in just a few plants.

There is one Indonesian eBay vendor I've used with good results. While the shipping is $35, the phyto is included. If you get more than one plant, the shipping is less painful.

 o
RE: Online sources

Michael,
Which Indoensian Ebay vendor you bought?

 o
RE: Online sources

I bought from Vitch. He was very reasonable, communicative, and stands by his plants. (Hmm, Tammy Wynette in the back ground, "Stand by your plants....)

The plants came intact and established well. I had one problem and he replaced the plant. He sends the exact plant pictured and doesn't substitute. Plant were shipped with phyto and carefully packaged. I didn't care for the bidding process, but you do what you do (whatcha do...) to get the plants you want. I have strict limits.

Aside from the bad song puns, I've had good results with eBay. I like it, but I don't like bidding against people. Many times, I simply stop.

 o
RE: Online sources

I know Vitch and bought from him twice. you are right about his plants, they are well established.

 o
RE: Online sources

I have not mail ordered from them, but I've bought nice plants at Grigsby Cactus in Vista, CA. My mom had a stunning S. kirkii var. pulchra for many years that looked like a work of art. I remember that I bought it there at a very reasonable price.

Here is a link that might be useful: Grigsby's Succulent list

 o
RE: Online sources

Thanks everyone for the links. I have found some plants locally and have received some real beauties from a friend :). So I am well on the way to addiction. I enjoy this list a lot, and have spent many hours reading through your posts.

Roberto, hey those are some great looking plants you have there.

I'm sorry did you mention what type they were?

Greg.

Which Sans did you get?? Were you able to find the Hahnis you wanted??

 o

Woodnative, i sent you an email thru GW. Barbara

Well, I hope you let us know too. You know we all want to know and congratulate you! It's the plant collector thing to do, after all. "Oh my, you got a "XXXYYYZZZ"? How delightful!"

 o
RE: Online sources

Here's a little sneak preview of some of my treasures. They are being guarded by watchdog, Missy.

 o
RE: Online sources

Oh you HAVE been busy. Fun. You're using the same pots I found. They're really sturdy for plastic. I have some that have lasted 10 years and counting.

Love your Missy. She's quite beautiful.

 o
RE: Online sources

Barbara,
Your teasing me. I want a better picture of each of yours sans. They look breath taking. What all named varieties do you have so far?
Stush

 o
RE: Online sources

I got my pots at Home Depot. They had several colors, but I like the terra cotta.

Thanks, I'm pretty crazy about Missy. She's five years old, but still the baby, spoiled rotten!

 o
RE: Online sources

GREAT group of Sans there!! Cute pup too!

 o
RE: Online sources

I think I may have been mistaken. Barb, are you using real terra cotta or plastic? I have plastic that look like that. I've been transferring nearly everything to plastic. It's just easier for me to control the water.

 o
RE: Online sources

Bonsaigi, You are right, plastic, but in a clay color. just looks more natural to me. I did get a couple of real clay pots for Ballyi and Pinguicula. I was a little afraid of overwatering. What do you think? would they be happier in plastic or clay?

 o
RE: Online sources

Well, word has it, plastic is better. I agree with that. I've had some in clay for years. They were kept way too dry in the winter and I actually lost one. A few are still in clay and while not suffering, they dry out too quickly. The ones in plastic or glazed clay do much better, are more vigorous, and have better root systems.

Funny, my ballyi and pinguicula are still in clay too. I plan on getting them into plastic next spring. I have a nice ballyi 'Minnie' in a pretty glazed pot that is absolutely flourishing. The straight species ballyi is in terracotta and growing much more slowly.

 o
RE: Online sources

I just got around to reading this thread, so I apologize for this late entry which may be questionable. Several years ago I bought some nice sans from Karole Brooks of Kimson Kreek Ranch. I quit because she sold only on eBay and I didn't like PayPal. Anyway here's a link. I'd like to know if anyone has purchased from her recently and if so, what do you think?

Here is a link that might be useful: Krimson Kreek Ranch

 o
RE: Online sources

I agree with you Solar. I like to have a steady price and one that is reasonable. I didn't see anthing that nice offered anyway.
Stush

 o
RE: Online sources

Thanks Solar Storm,

I had a look, but didn't really see anything very interesting. I have an order in with Bob Smoley, it's hopefully coming next week.
