This is the way I do it- it may not be right for you.

I take off a leaf or bract from of the bottom of the plant. I cut the leaf into 6" pieces and then I may even split that into two pieces. I put an arrow pointing down with marking pen so I know which cut goes down into the soil, if I have a many cuts, I prepare a flat or smaller. I leave no more than 3" of soil in the pot, single cuts, I put them into a 3" pot and fill with a fast draining soil. (put them into the smallest pot that they will fit into. I set the cutting all the way down to the bottom, I wait at least a week before I water. In this weather they may only take two weeks to strike down roots. These instruction are for fat leaves. This is a great time of year to try this. Norma
