Sans collapsed...

This is the second time I've had this happen. I posted a pic just a couple of weeks ago of my S. 'Lucille Polan' which looked perfect. Today, I found the center leaves dried up and contorted, and the outer leaves were starting to dry from the base of the plant. I pulled off the drying leaves and took cuttings above the dry part, but I know chances are, I won't get variegated plants from cuttings. I pulled the plant from the pot and knocked off the dirt and the roots look fine, so I went ahead and replanted to stump hoping it'll make a comeback. This happened with another variegated Sans, which was too far gone to do anything with by the time I found it (it must happen fast!) Does anyone have experience with this, know what causes it, how to prevent it? There were no signs of pests, it wasn't in too much sun - I can't think of another problem that might have caused this...
