Shade trees

We would like to plant shade trees and live in St. Mary's/Kingsland, GA area. Are there any tree farms within a 50 mile radius where we can purchase trees and plant them ourselves? No one I have asked in the neighborhood seems to have any idea other than Lowe's or Home Depot. Are the tree farms, if there are any, only available to commercial landscape companies. I do not want to purchase anything else from the company that landscaped our yard as stuff isn't doing too good and they let the sod sit for two days before they put it down, so asking them is not an option. What trees do well in this climate for shade and are fast growing? Our house faces southwest so afternoons in the summer are brutal on anything out there. Of course same problem in the morning in the back of the house.

Thank you.

RE: Shade trees

I can't help with the tree farms info but I did want to suggest a tree that I absolutely love for shade.

That is a Drake Elm.

We planted two a few years back and they grow pretty fast.

The tree has a small leaf and has a slight willow effect.
Foliage is dense.
One of our trees took on damage from a nearby tree during hurricane Ivan and I was devestated. But with proper pruning the tree revived and is back to a beautiful shape again.

I fell in love with the tree when I was visiting an Art in the Park event in a nearby town. I had to contact the town the following week to find out what it was.

I'm sure someone will come along soon to advise, but if not, there is a forum on trees you might try.

I spoke with a landscaper from Brunswick and that is the tree he recommended, so it is good to hear it from someone who isn't trying to sell me one. Where did you get yours? I realize it might not be possible to buy and plant ourselves, but it is so easy to dig in this sandy soil, I could put in a lot more if i didn't have to pay someone else to do it. Thank you.

RE: Shade trees

We purchased from Floral Tree and Gardens in Pensacola, FL.

I will admit I had a hard time locating the trees in our location.

Must admit you have me thinking about getting another.

I'm here 6 mo. and I too am looking for a local (grower) sources of 3" cal. trees....maybe 'wholesale sources' b/c I'm a landscape architect...just a few I-95 exits north of Eileenie. I see huge Monrovia over in S/W GA..(Cairo)and Shady Grove up in SC and many many up in the Eastern US horticulture capital..McMinnville,TN. But who's closer?
I'll have to check into the "Drake" Elm...I need shade fast to cut down on AC bills! The Landplan Man

I did a quick search on web and found this nursery that is in Georgia that has the Drake Elm.

Maybe?? this will help you out.

I love my Drake Elms they have small leaves and somewhat of a willow effect.

I found a small nursery in Woodbine, exit 14 I-95. It is right in front of you when you come to the stop sign off the exit ramp. It does not have a sign. He deals mainly with commercial I think, but will sell to the general public. He is very knowledgeable about this area as far as gardening, landscaping, etc. He is expensive, but the plants and trees look great. I have also found, but not been to, another nursery called Dixie Acre Tree farm. They are open Fri Sat Sun from 10-5pm and the phone number (for directions, as I won't even try to give those) is 912-276-4446.
Good Luck and Happy Gardening. It's raining as I write this!!!!

The neighbors on both sides have Drake Elms. I spend the Spring pulling Drake Elm seedlings out of my yard by the hundreds. So do the neighbors. They are pretty trees, but the offspring will be everywhere - even througout a good, lush St. Augustinegrass lawn.

I will have to look about my Drake Elms and see if we have any seedlings. If I've been getting them, they've been mowed in the past.

I absolutely lucked out and found a local Home Depot that had 4 Drake Elms (7'tall) for $15 each. I bought them all.
The two we bought previously I paid $40.

I called the local nurseries in Pensacola and got prices ranging from $55 to $85.

So if I can get seedlings I would be very pleased.
This is one of my favorite trees.
The bark is so beautiful as it matures.

RE: Shade trees

Oh, gosh, let me say it again in the hopes that someone will be saved this misery. It is early spring and I now have Drake Elm seedlings by the hundreds of thousands in my yard. Popping up everywhere. I am so, so tired of them. Every square inch of every bed is full of them. Even in the front yard - - despite the fact that both neighbors' Drake Elms are in their back yards. I have been pulling them most of the day and have hardly made a dent.
