Looking for a Bible...

Posted by Mr.David 8 (My Page) on

I live in Charleston, SC (region 8) and I'm looking for a some sort of plant "bible" specific for my area if it even exist. I would like it to include a list of native plants to the area as well as imports that would look good and survive and thrive.
Any suggestions?

RE: Looking for a Bible...

Hi Mr. David-
I am just a few miles south of you.
The Southern Living books were my bible for many a year
Steve Bender's "Passalong Plants"
The Plant Delights catalog (
Antique Rose Emporium ( I have had great luck with noisettes
I find that as many plants with historical/garden worthy value growing in Charleston- the local nurseries don't sell the plants that work! Check out gingers too!

I mean North of you!

RE: Looking for a Bible...

The 'Bible' if you have the cash is Odenwald's 'Identification, Selection and use of Southern Plants'. My guru is Felder Rushing. He co-wrote 'Passalong Plants'. All of his books are gold standard.
