Scary Orange Fungus in Mulch

Help! Last fall, I re-mulched several of my beds with cypress mulch. There is now a scary looking alien like fungus growing in them. It starts out as white golf ball size "eggs" and then "hatches" and an orangish- pink growth comes out. It is very smelly. I have heard of others in the Savannah area who have had this fungus, but have not found a way to get rid of it. Has anyone had the same problem?

This sounds like the stinkhorn fungus. It seems to like woodsy or well-mulched soils. It smells bad but doesn't hurt anything. Probably, it has some benefits for your soil.

Thanks for the info-I've done some searching and it's definately columned stinkhorn. Removing the mulch and digging up the spores seem to be the only way to get rid of it.
