Savannah in early March?

Hi Folks,
I'll be finding myself in the general area the beginning of March and I was wondering if anyone would like to recommend any gardens or parks or other botanical wonders that might be great to see that time of year...Frankly, any ground not covered with snow that time of year will be a thrill for me coming from Vermont..Thanks in advance for any tips,
Randi

Hi Randi, I live in N.Florida but I was in Savannah late last Febuary. From my time there I can recommend a walking tour of downtown to take in the blooming dogwoods, azalias and the other signs of spring. The squares in the downtown area are so lovely anytime of year, but they put on a real show in the spring. Hope that you have an enjoyable trip. Don't forget to pack a sweater with your shorts and flip-flops, March can still be pretty chilly in S. Georgia.

The Bamboo & Coastal Gardens has an annual spring festival in March. http://pubs.caes.uga.edu/caespubs/horticulture/coastalgarden/coastalgarden.htm

Other garden tours have included the Wormsloe Plantation and the Juliet Lowe home. The Ships of the Sea museum has a great 19th century Parlor Garden with amazing annuals. The Owens-Thomas house as a formal garden out back. The squares downtown are lovely as well, and you'll glimpse many beautiful private gardens behind gated walls as you stroll. HGTV did a thing on "secret gardens" of Savannah: http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/gl_gardens_secret_gardens/article/0,,HGTV_3594_1380467,00.html

About 40 miles from Savannah, but nice if you have the time is the 10 acre GSU Botanical Garden in Statesboro (40 miles from Savannah). www2.gasou.edu/garden. If you take the old highway 80(?) out there, you'll also see some of rural GA. Have lunch at Leigh Ann's Cafe if you're there, great food!

Have a great trip, relax, and enjoy your time in the South.

Actually, the entire Historic District is one big garden. It measure about one mile in each direction. A walking tour is a must as you can also peek into the walled private gardens along the way. Early March will not be as fully "in Bloom" as later. If you have a car, a trip out to Bonaventure Cemetery if worth while. Check out this site for a very small taste of Savannah.

Lock your car doors if you go to Bonaventure Cemetery and don't leave any valuables on the seats. Ditto for the Historic District. Savannah's the most beautiful city in the US but crime's a real problem here. Better safe than sorry.
