Our local extension agent says they are a problem and should be removed and replaced with something else. He suggested cleyera japonica or lorapetalum.

Excess fertilization is one of the worst things for fire blight, as well as the other fungus diseases that plague this plant. I suggest removing the two sickly plants and hoping for the best for the remaining shrubs.

We have photinia too, and I've read all the posts about tearing them out, but just can't fix my heart to do it . . . so early this spring I cut back the sickly looking ones to nearly nothing, and I've been rewarded by wonderful new life! I didn't fertilize or anything, just cut them back and hoped. Good luck with yours.

I think we might have bugs eating our red tips hedge instead of fungus. Is that possible? I've read lots of postings that say red tips are very susceptible to fungus but we've seen bugs and the leaves have holes in them. Is it the same leaf spot/fungus that everyone talks about or something else? Any advice? Thanks...
