On another forum I read where a heavy mulch of worm castings repels whiteflys on plants like the Confederate Rose. Does anyone know of any worm farms in the SC Lowcountry? I want to give this one a try.

While you are searching for worm castings would you try an experiment for me? Cut some clothes dryer sheets in 2" strips and just tie them gently around each major branch on your Confederate Rose. Maybe you would report back any observations as to it reducing the whitefly population. Also, are you (or your neighbors) growing the variegated form of Privet? This is a major whitefly host. If you can send it off to plant heaven your whitefly problem may disappear.

There was an article in just the last day or so about a lady in Savannah who has worm castings. Here is the address: http://www.savannahnow.com/stories/031602/LOCCompostqueen.shtml

Get a worm farm and have a never-ending supply. In my opinion it's a superior method of composting.

I've just started a worm tank and hope to get some worm castings for future use. So if I do succeed, I'll post to let you all know. Err, I used some soil they came in with from the back of my house and I wonder if they will grow and produce castings as well? Please advise as this is my first tiem doing such a thing for my plants and gardn. Thank you. :) |
