need ornamental shrub advice

I need to put some foundation plants on the north side of my house on the western end. The area doesn't get sun until mid-afternoon, but by then the sun is really intense. We're not far from Charleston.
I planned to put Encore azaleas there, but now I'm thinking that they would suffer in the afternoon sun. How much sun can they take? If they aren't suitable, can you suggest something else that would be relatively low (3 to 4'), look good in a mass planting and bloom in the spring or summer? Thanks!

have you thought about Indian Hawthorn? I like the pink much better than the white.

Here is a link that might be useful: Indian Hawthorn

I've never grown Encore Azaleas myself but I have heard that the trick to getting them to bloom well is giving them plenty of sun.
