ranunculus in south GA

Alright ya'll, How's all your planting going? My question is concerning ranunculus in our area. The New Southern Living Gardening Book says they are perennials in the coastal south but then they say dig them up in the summer unless they can stay dry and replant in the winter. To me this is NOT a perennial, and where in the south can you plant something that can stay dry in the summer unless it's in a pot. The only other discussion on this was in '02 and it didn't really say anything. Could I have a few words from my fellow gardening pals about their experiences with this beautiful plant? Many thanks!
