Best Greenhouses in Savannah

I will be visiting my daughter in Savannah in May. I will be there only a few days and I want to make sure she gets good quality plants for her landscape. She lives on Dutch Island. Where are the largest and best nurseries or other places that sell outdoor plants.

Thanks.

May is not going to be a good time to plant shrubs for the landscape. They will not have time to establish good roots befor the heat sets in. If she has time to see that they are well watered, they might do OK, but if she can wait until the fall or next February or March, it will be better.

The Great Southern Nursery and Hester and Zipperers are two good ones. Hester's has three different stores in Savannah. There are smaller ones. There are also specialized ones such as Joiner's Daylilies. Joiner's will have the display garden open in May. It's well worth a trip. Just be sure that you don't get anything from California, especially from Monrovia, as Georgia and other states have placed a quarantine on shipments from there. The Sudden Oak Death fungus seems to be spreading from there.

There are other nurseries, but I think they are strictly wholesale.

Nancy,

There are several excellent places in Savannah for plants other than the ones mentioned above. Four Seasons is one, located past the big box stores heading toward I-95 on Abercorn, another is Secret Garden near Sams Club and a third is The Potting Shed on Highway 80. I'm sure if you give them a ring they will be pleased to give you directions. Good luck and happy shopping.
