Need Help With Crape Myrtle

Posted by nbarringer TN (My Page) on

I recently purchased a Muskogee Crape Myrtle. I did not know that this particular variation of tree grew to be 20-30 ft. tall and 20 ft wide. I planted on the edge of my flower bed about 3ft away from the house. And it is spaced about four ft away from some azalea bushes I planted. I planted it last week. Should I go ahead and move it to the yard? or can I just keep this tree pruned small.
What should I do?

Thanks

Nick

RE: Need Help With Crape Myrtle

Yes, I would recommend you move the tree right away while you can. It will be very hard to keep the tree small and it will grow right into the eaves of the house. Not good. Replant the tree and place the rootball/trunk no less than eight feet from the edge of the house. The normal spread of a Muskogee is 16-20' across. The sooner you do it, the better, as you will get a few feet of growth from the tree still this year. You will want to get it in the right place as soon as you can so it can get its root system established. You will be happier and the tree will be happier if you put it in a place that is suitable. For anyone that doesn't know, Muskogees are the pale lavender and are one of the larger and hardier varieties of crapes.
