Seabrook Island, SC - gardening? anyone?

KnoxvilleGirl

Hey there! As you can see by my name I am a Knoxville, Tennessee girl but my true HEART lies on Seabrook Island! I go there as often as possible and have stayed all over the island. I will return in October and am very excited. I wanted to know if there are any noteworthy gardens on the island that I might miss and any noteworthy plants to keep an eye out for.

Also, if someone answers I have some general non-gardening questions for you about Seabrook in October - something I have yet to experience!!

I worked at Seabrook Island many years ago when I was practically fresh out of college. I was there for about 5 years or so as their horticultural specialist. October is the BEST there! The pink muhlygrass will be blooming, and that is what you will take back with you in your memories.

What else is exciting there in October? We got a great marsh view villa for $600. I have always had the ocean view ones so this will be a great change of pace. I love gators and herons and all wildlife so this balcony w/ marsh is right up my alley.

Tell me more about what animals are active at that time if you get time.

Ah, the cassia should be in full bloom... Nothing like 'yellow fountains' in the lowcountry.

If you haven't already, you must see the "Angel Oak". It is near the intersection of Bohicket & Maybank Hwy, which is on the way to Seabrook. It is a majestic live oak that is 2000 yrs old. There is also a winery on Wadmalaw Island that is wonderful. They make muscadine wine...

    Enjoy the island~

I just love the island! Thanks so much for responding! I have seen the angel oak and it is pretty amazing. I can't wait for this trip. I love the landscape of Seabrook Island - especially the marsh areas - because it is so unique and different than what I have at home in Tennessee. I can't wait and am thrilled that the sumemr blooms being gone will not mean that it is visually boring. I looked up the muhly grass b/c I had never heard of it and WOW!!

If either of you have any info on what wildlife are active and visible at that time of year and what tempereatures are like then let me know...

The temperature should be absolutely perfect! The water will still be warm enough to swim and you can often wear sweaters in the evening. It sounds strange but needing a sweater means it is finally cool enough and that is a positive thing.
All the normal wildlife will be active and you'll see some migrating butterflies, birds and waterfowl (Bufflehead ducks come to mind). Look into a kayak tour for some awesome scenery and wildlife.
I have been trying to find an newspaper article from last year about an outstanding garden on Seabrook. It's one of those things I put away for safe keeping and have no idea where I put it. If it ever surfaces I'll send it on.

Yay! I was really hoping the normal wildlife would still be active. I have really played up the wildlife to Chad and he has never been so I had my heart set on alligators and birds galore and the occassinal deer and raccoon.

Thanks everyone for your posts. We are so excited and can't wait to see the wildlife and gardens in October...

If you are lucky, you will see a big Monarch visitation. At that time, all of the fall flowers will be blooming. I don't know if they still have large flower beds, but we used to plant thousands of mums around the beach club and other key areas. I'll never forget the year that hundreds of thousands of Monarchs spent a couple of days on their way South.
