 o
bleeding heart ?

Please cut me some slack because there is no picture.

On Princess Ann St in Montgomery, Al there is a plant the homeowner calls a bleeding heart, but it doesnt fit the bill for the common bleeding hearts.

The plant or maybe bush (about 7 feet in diameter and that tall) has flowers on it that look like bleeding hearts. Very bright red with an almost purple red blood drop. They are on stems 12 to 16 inches long and each flower is about the size of a quarter, 20 or so flowers to the stem. The entire flower stalk looks sorta like a yucca bloom. Leaves are light green and not glossy. There are stickers about like those on a healthy blackberry cane. The plant dies back to the ground in winter and comes up early in the spring. flowers in June and will re flower if old blooms are pruned.

The owner said a friend from central Florida gave her the plant 20 years ago.

If these crude hints ring a bell with anyone please share your knowledge with me.

Thanks

Could it be one of the Clerodendrum species(Glory Bower)? sometimes referred to as Bleeding Heart and a host of other common names. Check the link for one of the more common ones and see if there is a resemblance.

Here is a link that might be useful: Clerodendrum

The clerondendum that is commonly known as the bleeding heart vine in the south has small white bell shaped flowers with red tips that hang from the plant. Check out this link http://www.robrick.com/plants/plant_information.asp?ref=31

Could it be Erythrina crista-galli?

Serenoa;

This bush fits the bill for Erthina crista-galli. The flowers are a little bit more maroon with a deep purple center, but their structure looks right.

Thank you,

Grubber

I enjoyed the puzzle, Grubber. I have seen variation in flower color in this species from washed out orange to near red. If you like this plant,keep an eye out for Erythrina x bidwellii. It is a hybrid between E. crista-galli and E. herbacea. It is more shrubby and has even longer spikes of scarlet red flowers. It is my favorite of the hardy erythrinas.
