What true lilies will prosper on Gulf Coast?

Posted by Pcola z8 NW Florida (My Page) on

I planted and enjoyed my first ever lily this Spring. Stargazer was very nice and I hope for many year's blooms. I have now been bitten by the "lily bug." What other lilies will work here on the Gulf Coast? What are the conditions and practices which will encourage them to thrive? Thanks.

I live in Texas and all my lilies here do fine. I have them in containers and in the ground. Just make sure you provide them with the good drainage they need. They also like a little shade in the afternoon so they don't bake. I'm sure living in a very hot climate has taught you that "full sun" doesn't always mean full sun for you. :)

I'm not on the gulf coast but am a mile from the Atlantic in a zone 8 borderline 9 area with humidity you can swim in. I grow Stargazers and Easter lilies and both are awesome! My neighbor grows orange turk's caps and lots of folks grow oriental lilies. The same wisdom that applies to most bulbs applies to the lilies: they have to be well-drained. Mine flourish in my sandy soil.
