Ok all you garden experts - Now that Summer is fading, what do you recommend planting now? Seeds? Perennials? Annuals? Shrubs? etc?

I'm no expert, but Walmart had seeds for 6 cents a pack yesterday. I figure with another 3 months of growing season, I can't go wrong. Some were perennials and some were annuals. The nurseries are beginning to put some things on sale, and I'll add more perennials to my beds from the sale tables. Some seeds I'll save for winter sowing. Betty |

You can gather seeds for winter sowing. Fall is a good time to plant trees, shrubs and bulbs. Watch sales on plants. They are not discounting them without a reason. Always select the most well proportioned plant. Make sure it has healthy foliage. If it's losing it's leaves or many leaves are yellow or brown, leave it there. Check the root ball. Some plants are vulnerable to over-dry soil conditions in a pot. If the center of the root ball should dry out, it can damage a plant signifigantly. Always review the roots of a plant before you purchase it. Make sure the roots are loose, and the soil is moist. There should also be a "spidery pattern" of white roots. If the roots looked spiraled, leave the plant.

I'm not an expert either, but I'm sowing fast growing the annuals-- melopodiums and sunflowers to fill in gaps and give much needed color--I'm sure there's much more fast growing annuals that will do well right now. I'll be sowing the annual lobelias, snapdragons, and sweet peas when it gets a little cooler. My pinapple sage gave great red long lasting color in autumn last year, so be sure to get some. Right now, summer doesn't seem to be fading. Everything seemingly melting in the humidity--including me! Good luck.

I sowed a flat of violas, and none germinated...go figure. Sowed a flat of snapdragons, and they seem to be germinating. However, with my 12 hour days schedule every other day, I don't think I'm going to sow any more seeds in flats. The amount of soil in those little 6-packs is difficult to keep evenly moist for germination and then keep the little seedlings viable til large enough to transplant. I'll probably go to 4-inch pots for my next foray into seed starting here in the hot south. Now I just need to pot up some stuff in size to make room, lol. jeribelle
