Lawn Service Help

Read the two messages about the lawn care service two
individuals were having problems with here in Savannah
and islands. I have a wonderful lady who does mine and
thye have yet to harm a plant of mine. All I have her
do is lawn and edging. We people of the South are good
people! Have lived around the states and overseas and have
never had a problem getting things done in my lawns and
gardens the way I wanted it done. It is in how you approach people. I am so sorry you think we are a bunch
of idiots around here, but you do get alot more done with
sugar, rather than vinegar. ernie2

RE: Lawn Service Help

Hi Ernie, I'm a native Southerner myself, a "South Georgia Boy", and my family has been in this great state of Georgia since 1741, and I am and very proud of it. I do not know Jerribelle personally, but have communicated with her via this forum a bit. I do not think she meant any disrespect whatsoever to the South or her people, rather just showing frustration at the local lawn services' lack of knowledge and thought. I travel all over this great country of ours, literally, on a regular basis, and there is no place I would rather be than the South, and specifically, the Coast, but being a "Southerner" is more a state of mind than where your birth certificate says you were born, don't you think?

RE: Lawn Service Help

Hi Ernie,

I meant no disrespect to anybody, nor any slam against people meant directed at their heritage. I have been here long enough to love it here. I have made many good friends, both locally-born and transplants, since I have relocated here. If you were offended, my apologies to you.

What I was trying to convey was the repeated problem I have had with what is really a simple, basic service. One of my sons has spent many years in the lawncare business, and I am not an unfeeling, nitpicky person, toward anybody, and especially service people. I have not put out vinegar at any time, only sugar. It's the lawncare service's responsibility to do their work properly, and for that they have to take responsibility. If they are careless and damage plantings, that does not mean the customer has an acid tongue. That means the person doing the lawn was careless.

I did stress in my post that I try very hard to fit in, in my new community, and believe me, it can be trying when you don't know all the 'rules' of the community you live in. However, I have found people to be very kind, helpful, and enjoyable here, and I'm staying! LOL

Now, if you want to share that lawncare person's info, please send it to me. I have mobility problems due to health issues, so I require the mowing, trimming, and edging to be hired. Not sure if the person you use does a standard package, but I welcome recommendations here.

Thanks, Wilmingtonislander, for your additional comments. I'm glad you understood the post the way it was intended. I meant to express nothing other than frustration over poor service.

RE: Lawn Service Help

jeribelle, we knew that! don't worry about it. I am going to contact some of my friends that live in one of the gated communities to see who they use. I am sure that if they were clutzy they wouldn't have a contract long. I will e-mail you with a name or two when I get them.

I have known one woman who owns the service that does the grounds at our church. I will check with her too. I don't think she goes out your way but she might be willing to reccomend someone who does. She has a terrible time keeping enough workers. In this heat, anyone that can find something else to do.......does!! About the only thing worse is roofing.

Hope you had a good first week back at school!!

RE: Lawn Service Help

Hey, thank you PB! I agree, this heat has to take its toll on the poor folks who work outdoors for their jobs. I know it makes me sweat, not too purty, lol.

First week of school was busy, and I'm buried in homework, per usual. I envy those young'uns their brains, and how fast they catch on to things. Not so here - gotta really work for the knowledge.

Jeribelle:
Are you a teacher? Or, are you going to school yourself?
Most of my sisters are teachers and one is a nurse. My
brother retired from the Navy and lives in Virginia.
Those that are teachers say they really love it! Two are
currently teaching in Florida. one has quit, she was teaching in Texas. You have my prays if you are a teacher!
I know that is something I just could not do! If you are
the student where are you going to school? ernie2

When PB mentioned that the lady who works on her church grounds has a "terrible time keeping workers" she really hit the nail on the head. That problem seems to have affected all areas these days.
Is there a horticulture program at your local community college? Perhaps they would have a student - who appreciates and shares your interests in gardening - who could use a part time position caring for your lawn.

RE: Lawn Service Help

Lol, folks, I'm the student! 50 years and counting, lol. Working on my bachelors degree, in econ. Already have my assoc in accounting from up north, where I earned my CPA. Now if I can just get the years of education they demand here, maybe they will certify me...sure hope they don't throw any more roadblocks in my way, as I already paid my dues passing the toughest credentialing exam in the nation - only 12 percent pass rate. But can't practice here without the bachelors degree, so I'm doing the education thingy, when I should be earning money to live on. Sheesh, 'nuff of that. Gardening is my salvation, tho when I'm in school, I have precious little time for digging in the dirt. Hoping someday to be able to do a bit more, when my weeks settle down to a more normal 40-50 hours instead of 80 + hours.

On the keeping workers, I can't blame people for looking for 'indoor' employment here! It's gotta be brutal working outdoors in the heat all day every day. I really feel for them.
