Arum Italicum

Is anyone down here in southeast coastal Georgia growing this plant? It looks like it would be perfect as a winter plant when so much else is sleeping.

RE: Arum Italicum

I'm not much impressed by arum. I planted five arum bulbs four years ago. The spot is shaded except for a couple of hours of direct sun. The clump has survived, but it has not increased in size. The leaves resemble those of calla lilies. They die back mid-summer, then new ones emerge in early winter. I've never seen a bloom or red berries. I've wondered if it might do better in a different location, but it looks good enough where it is, so I leave it alone.

I brought a number of Arum Italicum plants with me, from WA, when we moved to coastal GA seven years ago. One of my favorite winter plants in WA, the arum, here, has been a BIGGG disappointment. They have gradually wasted away, despite being planted in shaded areas, with good enriched soil. There are only one or two skimpy little plants that continue to volunteer each winter.

RandiT,
Thanks for that information. They look so pretty and I was hoping I could have some winter interest from them. Guess I'll have to look for something else.

Arum Italicum is indeed a beautiful plant, I had many of these in WA. I hate to break your balloon, but I sure did not have ANY success, in GA, with the plant. Maybe someone else can offer more optimistic results?
