| One thing that is becoming important to Live Oak owners (and other oaks) is preventing the possible infection by a fungus spread by the Nitidulid beetle which is attracted to sap leaking from pruning cuts or injuries from storm damage etc. It is called Oak Wilt and it can kill your tree (even an old one) quickly. Find out if your area is affected and follow the instructions of your state agriculture extension. The recommened prevention here is to always prune in the months BEFORE spring and paint all cuts and injuries immediately. This goes ditto for other oaks which can spread the disease to others around them, such as red oaks and even white oaks. |
