picket fence nightmare! a word to the wise...

After saving up for 4 years I finally contracted a major installation service to build some picket fence in front of my home. Never was it stated that a building permit was needed, even tho' this huge company builds fence in the Savannah area on a regular basis.
The long and short of this sad story is that yes, indeed, a permit is required for fence in Chatham County, tho' generally most folks are unaware of it. It seems to only be enforced when a neighbor complains to the county and building and safety then steps in and does their duty.
I now have to pay several hundred dollars for a survey to determine if the fence, which is set back 12" from the sidewalk, is actually on my property. Plus the fence was built while I was at work & is easily a foot higher than I would liked it to have been, and the corner which is the first view folks have driving in the subdivision, was not built well. Hence the complaints. The whole thing looks funky and will have to be redone,IF building and safety even allows me to. Perhaps this might save a reader a repeat episode in the future....Has anyone in our area gone thru' something like this? Thanks! |

| Yes, somewhat similar. We are in the Laurel Island subdivision in Kingsland, Ga and were told when we bought our lot the only type of fence allowed was a 3 ft vinyl WHITE picket fence. Well, now all of a sudden it's changed and we are told it has to be black as not to obscure the view of the retention pond in our backyard. ( I thought black was for cemeteries, museums, churches, etc.) We supposedly having an architectural review board, although no one can will give us the names of these people. We would like to appeal the decision as the president of the homeowners assoc(the only officer that we actually know of) is the one who told us about the white fence, but she will not stand by her word. We are from the midwest and have never experienced anything like this. Total dishonesty. We have a small dog and fear for his safety as we back up to a busy street. The irony of it all is about half of the retetion pond is covered with algae. Homeowners have called numerous times and nothing gets done, yet we are forced to look at that. YUCK! Isn't that a health hazard? Can we call the city to try and get something done. They try to refer to it as a "lake" but everyone knows it's just a retention pond with alot of trash, dead trees and soil erosion. So yes, there are other fence nightmares. It's just the dishonesty is shocking. good luck to you. I think the "For Sale" sign is going up at our house. |

We put up our fence for safety reasons, too. Living out in the country was a whole lot easier, plus folks minded their own business......and no homeowner associations! Hope you can resolve your issues, too. Think I'll be working on mine for sometime to come. |

| I am in a subdivision and had to draw up a proposal for the covenant board to get my picket fence approved. I played on the computer and had fun with graphics, using online photos to turn my house from the Addams Family Monstrousity sans fence to a Beatrix Potter fantasy cottage WITH the fence. I got approval and installed the fence, then my neighbor had a fit and convened 3 emergency sessions of the board to try to get my approval overturned... my fence still stands, as does the privet hedge between our properties. |
