Durchman's pipevine

I just got in the mail a dutchman's pipevine I bought on ebay...the seller was in Maine...(the only one I could find)

My understanding is that they do grow here, but they like shade..I also know they can grow really tall...I have a small shady area under a canopy of tall pines....perhaps a perfola or tall lattice there?

Can anyone tell me success they have had? And did you get any pipevine sweallowtails?

Any help appreciated.

Well I just moved back to my Tampa, FL home so I have to update my information :) But here, Dutchman's pipevine grows incredible. It is evergreen even when my yard because of its location gets some nasty freezing temperatures. I have yet to get the pipevine swallowtail, but actually get lots of a different large black butterfly someone was told me was called a Goldrim. It is easy to train, easy to cut back, and develops gorgeous bark and entanglements looking like a fancy artist's type plant. In shade, it keeps a rich green color fancier then ivy.

Getting the right species is the key to success. There are a lot of different species of Aristolochia around the world. A native to the eastern U.S. is cold hardy at least to zone 6. Some I tried when I lived in Miami seemed delicate. In Jacksonville, FL, I have success with the Florida native, A. tomentosa, and I have seen both gold rim and pipevine swallowtails. By the way, the gold rim is considered a swallowtail even though it does not have tails.

Hello Serona,

I'm in coastal SC.

I bought it on ebay from a seller in Maine...it was the onlyone I could
find.

One of my big weaknesses is not learning my latin names and cultivars, and
that can cost me when I'm trying to make more accurate decisions....

I have plant tags and markers, but never seem to have them in one place to
write them down....thus I knew the species, but am not sure now....

It get's hot here in summer....I'm thinking I should plant in a bit of
shade?

Gold rim swallowtails...sounds beautiful....they're not in my Carolina
butterfly book, which means they don't range up here...but as you suspected,
I'm looking to attract pipevines.

I'm also looking for spicebush, and paw paw....

I have a very large backyard, and am wanting to desigh something that is
beautiful, yet purposeful for birds and butterflies....with a large
pond/bog, and caterpillar host plants....
