Clivia miniata

What is the secret to getting Clivia miniata to bloom properly? I've had it for 30+ years (about 25 of those in a pot). In that time it has succesfully bloomed about 7-8 times at most. It's now in the ground under tree shade. It only gets early morning and late afternoon sun, or bright light. The leaves are deep green, broad and leathery to touch; and it has made many pups. What often happens is that in late winter or early spring, when it sets bud, the flowers remain fixed deep at the base of the leaves, don't fully open and never rise above the leaves on a flower stalk. What am I doing wrong?
