check plants thoroughly before buying

On Saturday, I stopped a local nursery on B__ Street looking for a grapefruit tree.
The nursery I normally buy from was completely out and would not be getting any soon.
Well the trees were all lined up on the side of the building, so I walked over and checked the leaves
and soil being careful not to bring something home to infest my other trees.
While checking the leaves I noticed that they were covered with tiny black bugs and there were lots of them.
So I asked the guy what were the little black bugs on all the leaves, he said he wasn’t sure so he
took off a leaf and took it inside for someone more experienced to look at it.
Well he came back a few minutes later and said yes, it's some type of black fly infestation,
but I just sprayed them the other day.
Then he looked at me and asked if I still wanted one.
I was shocked that he would offer sell me a tree that is knowingly infested with bugs.
So I said to him not for that price, which was $42.00!!
I told him if I have to quarantine the plant and nurse it back to help, surely I should get a discount.
He refused, so I got into my car and I left, I could understand this happening at Lowes or Home Depot, but this nursery is suppose to have a pretty good reputation and I'm disappointed that I still do not have a grapefruit tree :(

| Good for you for not buying infested plants. Were they aphids, do you think? |

| I once mentioned here on GW that I always carried a small magnifying glass when shopping for plants. I still do and carefully check nursery stock for tiny critters that could cause major headheaches in my garden. Much to my surprise one of the self appointed organic 'experts' that posts on these Forums laughed at me and told me I was nuts. My years of owning a growing nursery taught me that all sorts or problems can arrive on imported plants and soil...especially soil. Good advice, Ginabug! |
