Cutting Garden

I have a new space for a large cutting garden - easy access to water, plenty of sun, but just enough shade it the hottest part of the day.

What would you plant in a cutting garden? Why? Color isn't a primary concern, but repeat blooms and things that hold up well after they are cut.

Thanks
JR

RE: Cutting Garden

Hey JR,
I'm in the hot and humid New Orleans area. One of my
favorite flowers for cutting is Zinnia. There are several
different types. My favorite is the large California
giants. They get as tall as me. 5' 3". I have to stake
them. They come in seed packs at Walgreens or Big Lots
for 10 to 25 cents in the spring. They grow well from
seeds started 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost date.
Or you can direct sow them. I also like to add herbs to
my flower arrangements. Dill, basil, rosemary and the like.
They give some extra fullness and the smell is wonderful.
The herbs are pretty easy to start from seed or you
can get small starters in the spring. Good luck with the cutting garden.
