100 year old Pecan tree disaster

I feel just sick about this. I had some very old pecan trees right on the street. They were dirty, sticky, brittle and dropped leaves all over the neighborhood. In a fit of insanity, I had them cut to the ground. People driving by are in absolute shock now. I did a really stupid thing. My question is now, will they grow back from the stump? If so, do you leave multiple shoots until they are a bush and then eliminate all but one?

You will probably get fast growing shoots coming up around the entire trunk. I have never heard of anyone trying to bring a tree back this way. I think that if you did, it would be weak at the old tree to new tree transition and not amount to much. Also, Pecans are a slow growing hardwood and you would be lucky to have a 15' tree in 10 years. Give it up and move on. You aren't going to redeem yourself.
