hey all! I love the scent of stargazer lillies, but have heard mixed reviews about whether we can or canna grow them here... so, I thought I would come straight to the source! Anybody have any luck growing stargazers? I know a lady who grows easter lillies and she swears they come back every year. that's close, but no cigar!

Rob - are stargazers the pretty pink and white blends?? I was in a hotel lobby the other day and the scent from the lillies stopped me in my tracks! I followed my nose until I found them...

My neighbor grows beautiful Stargazers (we are outside Beaufort, SC).
They are pink and white and you probably noticed the strong scent because you were indoors where it was contained. I imagine it would disperse somewhat outside. But, on a still night, they would probably scent your garden. Go for it!

tx! The flowers are gorgeous... I was inside the lobby of the Omni Hotel in downtown Charleston - a huge room, with a big curved double staircase, several restaurants and shops, etc.; and the scent STILL stopped me in my tracks! Isn't it funny how your nose takes over, and you follow it before you even realize what you are doing???

I have them in a pot since I'm in the lowest part of the coastal flood plain(read that "delta") here in Mobile, Al. They've been in that same pot for years, poor things, and bloom every summer anyway. I think this year I'm going to unpot them and give them some bonemeal!

I know this is late response, but most of the lillies grow great here. I live in Mt.Pleasant, SC, and am wondering if Pagan is Charleston, SC.Thanks

I am in Houston and I was able to grow stargazers last year - all I did was try to "shade the roots" and "plant in a raised bed" as per various instructions I had read.

I had a nice month-long blooming period of stargazers and Casa-Blanca lilies, although I must admit they looked a bit forlorn compared to the ones on the label (mine didnt get very high and tended to flop over a little rather than grow straight upwards) -

Will they come back this year? I doubt it (I know I wouldnt if I was asked to take a houston summer without A/C) , but home depot is selling them at fire-sale prices so I will just buy some more to give me another june of nasal wonder

I hope this helps

I grow them here in Wilmington, NC. In fact I am absolutely amazed at how much the 32 lillies I planted from a Park Seed Offer, four years ago have multiplied and grown like crazy. One year my white regale (type of Casa Blanca), got almost 6' tall. I find them to be easy and tough plants actually. I have the asians and orientals and have a very nice stretch of blooms from May to early July with unbelievable aroma wafting through the air during this time. I have very sandy soil and I add lime each spring and don't overwater. No wet feet for these ladies. They do well in same bed as my bearded iris.

Yes, they will grow for you. Mine were a mother's day gift several years ago, and after they died, I transplanted them to rather large pots into very good potting soil. When they returned the following year, they were bigger and fuller than ever. They need good, deep soil, and lots of sunlight on their heads. Spray for early onset insects that tend to gather on the buds, keep watered, but not drowned, and you will have success. They are the first lilies I have ever grown. Do not remove foliage until completely dead and keep the pots watered so that they do not ever dry out completely

Good luck

Carol

My stargazers are coming back (in Houston) by the way so I guess they do well enough here!

RE: stargazer lillies

I am new to the gardening world and have recently planted a few things, the stargazer being one of them. This is one of the nost beautiful flowers I have ever seen. I have a question though, do they re-bloom? Or is it over after they have flowered once for this season?

RE: stargazer lillies

I don't know, if mine is a stargazer or not, it stands 5-6 feet tall, the colours are that of the stargazer, the pettals are very thick, almost like leather. I had the lily for 5 years. I almost killed it, transplanting it by cutting the bulb in half by mistake. But this year it has more than 15 blooms on it. It is geogeous and the scent wonderful.

RE: stargazer lillies

I was wondering if stargazer lillies can be grown potted indoors or if not partially indoors/outdoors? Also when is the best time to plant them and when do they bloom? Can you cut them and will they grow back if you do? Sorry I have a lot of questions I want to have them for my wedding and grow them myself.

Thanks
