just getting bulbs, can i plant now?

I forgot to order bulbs this year (I had major surgery, a temporary ileostomy, and I am having the reversal in January) and want to plant tulips and irises. How do I do this? I usually buy early and refrigerate for 6 weeks so they can have a winter.
Help! Thanks a lot! |

| loves roses: why not give the bulbs two weeks of refig. time now and plant by mid Jan. Don't believe it will be too late in our zone. |

| Irises don't need any fridge time. You can plant them now. The sooner they get a good root system, the sooner you'll have blooms. I've got some blooming now. Just remember not to plant them too deeply. Leave the top of the rhizome exposed. Hope you have lots of flowers to enjoy while you recover. Susie |
Mid-April. Bought tulips cheap. Any planting tips?

I visited family in the Atlanta area last weekend. Sister took me to a grower's outlet that had literally thousands of tulips on sale for 50 cents a pot. I bought 4 pots, and brought them home between Savannah and Brunswick. They have been sitting in my front yard for a couple days, and some are already blooming. I don't know whether to transfer them to a decorative pot, or to incorporate them into the front yard somehow. Most importantly, I DO NOT WANT TO KILL THEM! Any ideas or tips? |

| Dutchblue, I think you should put them in a pot and enjoy them. They will last longer if they are in a cooler place- maybe some shade in the afternoon and I wouldn't bother planting them in the ground, they are used as annuals here in zone 9-- |
