Is there a way to know if seed are too old?

Hi,

I have a lot of seed from 2005, 2006..maybe some that are a little older. Some of them are seed that I really wanted to grow but I just had more than I could sow. I have new seed that I am going to sow, and I have room to sow some of the old seed, but I would not enjoy sowing a lot of containers with old seed and then ending up with all empty containers.

I assume that some seed are more likely to have survived storage these past two or three years, so those are the seed I would like to try. Is there an article or a file somewhere that lists the different lengths of times seed are viable? I have found some references to vegetable seed, but haven't found something dependable for perennial and annual seeds.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks
