Saving liatris seeds

Okay, I don't know if I have asked this question or not but over the summer when the liatris were finished blooming and their plumes/blooms(whatever)had dried, I cut them and put them inside a brown lunch bag and shook them. The plumes take up a lot of room in the bag so I can't see if many seeds were extracted from the plumes. Should I take and rip open the bag on a piece of light Kraft paper or white butcher paper to see if any seeds fell in the bag? I can plant them then?
