Spacing plants to avoid crossing?

Hi all!

I already grow some heirloom varieties, and saved scarlet runner beans and kentucky wonder beans to plant, and want to do more seed saving, but I read somewhere that you have to have some great amount of space to do this, so that your curcubits don't all cross with each other and form melon-cucumber-gourd things instead of melons, cukes, and gourds, and so that Scarlet Runners and Kentucky Wonders don't wind up being Scarlet Wonders and Kentucky Runners.

Is this true, or can I save seeds even though I have a small closely-planted garden? Can a person without acreage save seeds, or would it mean I can grow cukes OR zucchini but not both to keep them from crossing? What about brassicas? I want my cabbage to stay cabbage, and brussels sprouts to remain brussels sprouts, and not cross with each other and make something that I won't be sure of from year to year.

Any advice from someone else out there saving seeds without a lot of space?
