To see if flowers are hybrid or not, I do a quick google search. Good catalogs always list that info. Velvet Queen is not a hybrid. So saved seed will come true. But to be totally sure it comes true another variety of sunflower can't be growing within a 1/2 mile. That can be tough to be sure of. If you get at least 1/4 mile though chances will be low, and good enough for your own saving. Also grow as many plants as you can for good genetic diversity. It would be good to have 10, much better to have 20. Again if you don't have the room and since it is for yourself, a few plants is ok.

Thank you so much, Remy! As my mom and stepdad live on about 5 acres, and the place where I was going to plant isn't remotely close to anything but a neighbor's cornfield, I'm not really thinking there will be too much trouble with crosses. I'll be sure to plant plenty, to get good diversity. I wish we lived on their huge property - we have just under 2 acres, and although I have a good sized yard, the bulk of our property is used to run a small amount of livestock, so I DEFINITELY don't want to plant anything there. At my mom's, they have their house, and a big metal building, and do nothing with the rest of the area, but mow it. So, I figure if they will let me use part of it, I will be VERY glad to do so!!
