The "terminator" technology applies only to genetically-engineered seeds (GMO's). It was designed to prevent the unauthorized saving of patented seed. The plants with these genes develop seeds & fruit normally, but the seeds produced are sterile. At present, there is a moratorium on this technology in the U.S., but I don't know of its current status in Canada.

Only a few GM farm crops for which seeds are easily saved (such as soybeans) are likely to receive approval... although I, for one, am vehemently opposed to this abuse of bio-technology. If you search GW for "bio-tech" or "GMO", you will find several discussions of this issue.

Gardeners are unlikely to be affected, unless the technology becomes more widely applied. At the worst, cross-pollination between GM vegetable varieties & their open-pollinated garden counterparts would cause poor germination in saved seed... but at least the spread of the genes would be halted (unless "terminator" is recessive).

Of far greater concern are the many genetically-engineered crops already in existence that do _not_ self-terminate, and the potentially irrevocable contamination of our food crops. As it is now, if you grow sweet corn in rural areas, chances high are that it will be contaminated (to some degree) by wind-borne GM pollen. But considering that GM sweet corn is already quietly entering our food chain, you are still better off growing your own.
