Hi Mark,
Your pod and seeds are not ripe. The link below shows various pics of Abutilon with ones that look like yours including seed pods that are ripe, even one cut in half. There is a pic of the seed too.
I'm not sure how long they take to germinate, but probably not long. Being other members of their botanical family have seeds that are viable for a long time, I'm going to assume it is the same for them.

Thanks for the great answer.

I just checked my plant tonight, and to my surprise, 3 seed pods had turned brown and cracked open:

I was afraid the seeds had already fallen out, in particular from the one pod. Surprisingly, it was the one with by far the most seeds. I lost one seed each from the pods on the left and in the middle.

I'll save a few of the seeds for myself and may plant a few out of curiosity. If anyone wants 8 seeds, email me and I can send them to a couple people for postage. Hopefully they can take some Echium wildpretii and Fuchsia boliviana Alba seeds (both about a week old) off my hands... In general I don't save seeds.

I've read that people sometimes grow this plant from seed as an annual, so I take it it is pretty easy. It is of course a perennial.

Here's the mother plant, which is the 'Teardrop' cultivar of A. megapotamicum. I'm not familiar with Abutilons, but I did see a different cultivar of this species recently with significantly larger flowers. At the time of the photo those are buds visible, not flowers. It looks like two are starting to open.

I got the plant earlier this year at Strybing Arboretum.
