rose seeds?

Hi - I was given some rose hips from a neighbor who knew I was growing plants from seed. The hips were completely dry and when I opened them I removed chaff with what looked like tiny seeds on the end, so I saved it. However, I read on this forum that the seeds should be harvested while the hips are still fleshy and that rose seeds are fairly large. There were no large structures that looked like seeds in the dried hips - where did the seeds go? Or do they shrink down considerably as they dry? The stuff on the chaff looks too small to be the same thing - it would require a LOT of shrinkage. Is what I saved worthless?

Thanks for the info,

Sandra
